We had so much digging and exploring in the soil. We found clay, humus, sand, plants, roots, rocks, and animals! Look for more pictures to come…

We have been working hard to get our blog stories typed and published! Students have learned about choosing small moment topics for stories, writing with leads and endings, adding dialogue, using show-not-tell and, of course, the ellipsis! Read on to see all of these great writing techniques in action…

My neighbor had to clean up and eat his dinner… Then he had to go to church. The second day he had to go to swim team. The third day he had to go to church again. I was CRAZY! Then we got to play. Finally! We built a time machine.

On a summer morning I walked downstairs with my pj’s on. Everyone but my dad was awake. I had a very good sausage biscuit. It was the best biscuit I had ever tried. I looked for my brother and my cousin Jake. They were sort of hard to find. They were being silly as usual. My dad sleeps for a long time. When it was time for him to get up I woke him up and asked him if I could go fishing. He yawned, “OK.” I held my breath. I was so excited! I was smiling a lot I was so happy. I was like an erupting volcano. I ran down stairs and told my grandfather that my dad said I could go fishing. He got my fishing rod ready. A little bit later when my dad was awake, I walked out to the dock and got my life jacket on. I baited my rod and casted. I didn’t think I would catch anything but I caught one. I was so excited I almost jumped in the water. I told my grandparents. They were very happy. I got my picture taken and put in the Fish Book. Everyone was happy. I was more excited than anything that had happened at the beach. I asked again, “Can I go fishing?” and they said maybe.

Me and Lila took out our planes. They were heavier than a box turtles head and as big as a great white sharks mouth! We practiced on a table. I said, “Let’s throw them.” “Okay,” said Lila. Then we went to the park. We walked down the stairs to the field. We got out remotes. Boom! Boom! Boom! We threw them up into the air. They took to the air as fast as a cheetah. The planes flew together. They did a flip. I said, “Wow!” The planes landed, then we went home. I was so happy. The End.

One hot and sunny morning we got on the bus and went to see our pen pals. On the way back Meisha was my buddy. She fell asleep. Then out of nowhere I heard someone sing their ABC’s. I turned around quickly and saw Meisha singing her ABC’s out of order. “A-X-Z-Y-S-T-P-B-L” I tried to wake her up. I shoved her lightly, she didn’t move. “Meisha, Meisha,” I said. She didn’t hear me. I sat back and said, “Oh well. ” When we got back. I told Meisha what she did. She didn’t believe me. The rest of the day I kept thinking about it. The End.

One day somebody came over to my house. He said, “Are you ready, Conard?” We started to tear up the floors. Then we got the staples up. Then my mom came home and helped. We started to stop because we didn’t have a floor. Then we got the floor. We put the floor in. My dog could not walk on the floors. It was too slick!

It was Christmas Eve. It was time to go to bed. So I brushed my teeth. Then I put my pajamas on. And hopped in bed. I slept in the bunk room with my cousins. Inez slept in the trundle. Bennen slept on the bottom. I slept on the top. Bennen told me to be quiet. He wanted to go to sleep. But he couldn’t. Inez cried, she wanted her mom to sleep with her. Inez’s mom told Bennen to read her a story. Bennen told her, “I will only read a little bit.” I had fallen asleep. I kicked myself to the bottom of the bed. Then I heard a sound… I looked up. My cousin was crying. Because his dad wasn’t in bed with him yet. So his dad told him he could help fix the camera with him. Bennen’s dad got in bed with Bennen. He told us when you close your eyes night goes like that. And it did.

One wonderful Tuesday after school… We went to the bakery. It was closed. “We will go get our snack somewhere else,” mom said. And we did. We were going back by the bakery and it was open! “You can have a double snack,” my mom said. “Thank you,” I said. And my mom took us in for another snack.
